Diaspora communities move time, talent, and treasure across borders every day. The Diaspora Academy turns that movement into market intelligence institutions can act on and leadership individuals can build with.
Institutions come to understand and reach the diaspora market. Individuals come to activate their own position inside it. One firm, built for both.
The Diaspora Academy is a diaspora advisory services firm and leadership institute that equips leaders and supports institutions engaging with diaspora communities. We pair diaspora market intelligence with leadership development, turning how diaspora communities move capital and build enterprise into strategy institutions can act on and frameworks leaders can execute.
Founded by Semhar Araia, a lawyer and strategic advisor, the firm draws from her expertise advising governments, international organizations and communities to advance the role of diasporas in development, through entrepreneurship, philanthropy, investment and policy advocacy.
When diaspora communities and institutional partners invest their time, talent, and treasures towards real outcomes, we know it deserves expert guidance, investment and resources. TDA is here to support that diaspora readiness with opportunity and help partners create the spaces they wish existed.
Semhar Araia founded The Diaspora Academy after more than two decades advising international organizations, governments, institutions and communities on how to design and execute diaspora engagement that makes real impact.
A lawyer and strategic advisor, she has testified before the US Congress on the role of diasporas in global philanthropy and development, advised world leaders on cross-border engagement strategy, and built two organizations that have trained, convened, and mobilized diaspora professionals across four continents.
Her edge is rare: she brings insider fluency, as an Eritrean-American lawyer and diaspora specialist who has lived and led within diaspora communities, combined with the strategic and policy expertise that institutions require. That combination is what TDA delivers to every client engagement.
Most who set out to engage a diaspora community start without the right map, strategy or framework. They cannot see which communities to prioritize, how trust gets built, what messaging lands, or how to design programs that produce lasting partnerships.
TDA delivers that clarity. We combine proprietary diaspora methodologies and analsyis, deep community relationships, and proven engagement frameworks to move you from intent to execution. We work across diaspora spaces worldwide, from Minneapolis to London, Lagos to Nairobi, Cairo to Colombo, and Shanghai to Seattle, bringing our full range of expertise to every engagement.
Your organization has identified diaspora communities as a target demographic. Now you need a roadmap.
TDA delivers the diagnostic assessments, stakeholder maps, and engagement strategies that translate that priority into a plan your team can execute — and your partners can trust.
Diaspora leaders and executives come to us to deepen their fluency and move with clarity.
TDA offers one-on-one coaching and advisory sessions customized to your goals, built for decision-makers acting on homeland investment, cross-cultural market entry, or diaspora strategy at the leadership level.
Teams and leaders engage diaspora communities more effectively when they understand how these communities think, decide, and invest.
TDA’s workshops build that fluency, covering diaspora market landscape, stakeholder engagement, philanthropic strategy, and advocacy design. We deliver them for organizations and leaders at any stage of diaspora engagement.
We build every engagement around your specific context. Institutions get custom cohorts, trainings, and partnerships that bring our proprietary frameworks directly into their leadership development infrastructure. Leaders get a pathway matched to their readiness and entry point, so the work meets them where they are and moves them forward.
Co-creation, readiness, and accountability anchor all of it. Your team gets the tools. Your organization gets the competitive edge that comes with genuinely diaspora-fluent leadership.
From Individual Purpose to Institutional Impact.
Diaspora impact happens at every level — from the individual leader building their first community initiative to the institution designing its first diaspora engagement strategy. TDA’s programs are built for both. Whether you’re a diaspora professional ready to define your purpose and build your influence, or an organization ready to invest in diaspora leadership at scale, TDA has a program designed for where you are and where you’re going.
The Diaspora Leadership Program is TDA’s flagship training for diaspora professionals ready to turn purpose into structured, sustained impact. Participants develop the skills to lead community initiatives, design diaspora engagement strategies, and position themselves as credible advocates within institutions and across borders.
The program covers diaspora identity and professional positioning, vision and leadership development, audience mapping, advocacy strategy, and impact measurement, delivered as a six-module intensive with coaching support built in.
DLP graduates are frameworks-fluent, community-grounded, and ready to lead. Completing the program earns a Certificate of Completion from The Diaspora Academy.
TDA’s annual leadership convening for second-generation Eritrean diaspora visionaries, creatives, professionals, and community builders, the people building something where they live and staying rooted in where they’re from.
EDIS is designed to equip. Every session is built around a practical leadership framework that participants carry into their communities, organizations, and careers long after the event ends.
EDIS returns each year as a virtual gathering. Open to all. Corporate sponsors, partners, and affiliates are welcome.
TDA brings diaspora leaders and institutional partners together through convenings designed to produce real connections, shared strategy, and measurable outcomes. Whether you’re looking to sponsor, attend, or partner, our events are built for people who are ready to do the work.

The journey of a changemaker is most powerful when shared, which is why we’ve created a monthly home base for our TDA alumni community. Every first Thursday of the month between 12–1 PM EST, we gather virtually to reconnect, hold space for what is currently top of mind in the diaspora sphere, and provide a supportive environment to answer your most pressing questions. This is your private forum to move beyond the classroom and into real-world collaboration, ensuring you remain connected to the heartbeat of the diaspora while building lasting relationships with like-minded advocates. We look forward to seeing you there—be sure to RSVP today and save the date to your calendar.

“Working with The Diaspora Academy was an exceptional experience. From our first conversation, they took a deeply collaborative approach. They didn’t deliver a pre-packaged session, but instead co-created an experience grounded in our team’s context and priorities. The team’s commitment to quality and meaningful impact was evident throughout. The final session was insightful, constructive, and thoughtfully delivered, and TDA was a true partner in ensuring our needs were fully met.”

“We were impressed with TDA’s knowledge, flexibility and commitment. They provided outreach and advocacy strategies for African women’s rights as a lead up to the US-Africa Summit in Washington, D.C. and helped us create products for our supporters and target new audiences, including young people and the African diaspora. We thoroughly enjoyed working together and would work with TDA again.”

“TDA’s Diaspora Leadership Program gave me the clarity I needed to move from intention to action. The coaching and guidance helped me think more critically about how to center community needs, define our audience, and shape a mission that’s grounded and relevant. TDA’s approach was both strategic and deeply human and I left feeling more equipped, more grounded, and with a clearer vision for how to build meaningful initiatives within my community. I definitely recommend this course to anyone ready to deepen their purpose and practice as a diaspora leader!”

We measure impact the way our clients do, by what an investment of time, talent, and treasure produces.
For diaspora leaders, that means ventures launched, communities organized, and careers that move with real clarity. For institutions, it means partnerships built, new markets reached, and strategies that hold up over time.
Behind every figure below is a framework we applied and a relationship we helped build, because strategic connection is what drives lasting economic and civic progress.

Our clients come from across sectors — what they share is a recognition that diaspora communities represent a strategic priority, and require planning, partnerships and investment. We work with organizations at every stage, from those building their first diaspora engagement strategy to those deepening relationships they’ve had for years.
Whether you’re entering diaspora markets for the first time or deepening an engagement that hasn’t produced the results you expected, TDA brings the expertise, relationships, and frameworks to move you forward.
Let’s build your diaspora strategy together.
